Lee was a philosophy student at Rockford College before enrolling at the Kansas City Art Institute, where she studied with Ernest Lawson. Her style, however, reflects neither Lawson's Impressionist bent, nor the abstract innovations she saw during visits to France and Italy as a young woman. Almost whimsically naive, Lee's approach is distinctly her own, despite her frequent association with such American Scene painters as Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood.
