During World War II, Turnbull served as a combat artist for the U.S. Government and an artist correspondent in the Phillipines for Life magazine. Mrs. Anderson reflects Turnbull's interest in rural life during the war. An interesting element of Turnbull's composition is the "Son's of Service" flag seen in the window of the house in the background. Many American families with members in the armed services displayed these flags. The blue star in the center of a red-bordered white triangle signified that someone in the household was serving in the military. the flags displayed a star for every person in the family in active service. the blue stars were replaced or overlaid with gold or yellow stars if a family member died in action.
