Robert MacDonald Graham Jr. studied with Thomas Hart Benton at the Kansas City Art Institute. Benton selected five of his works to show in the exhibit of student work at the Associated America Artists Galleries in New York in 1940. Peaceful Evening was purchased by Reeves Lowenthal, founder of the gallery, for his personal collection. Graham considered it as one of his finest works.
